The Colosseum, in Rome

Emperor Vespasian built the great amphitheatre to immortalize the name of the Flavians; Emperor Titus.

The Colosseum was inaugurated in 80 AD.
Afterwards, details were added by the Emperor Domitian.

Its construction took eight years.
The external architecture consisted of three storeys of arches
(80 arches per story)
surmounted by the attic in masonry decorated with pilasters.

The velarium was an awning that was used on special occasions
to cover the Colosseum, to protect spectators from the heat of the sun.

These travertine blocks (left) were used to tie ropes that secured the velarium.

These five travertine blocks are what is left of original 160 blocks that surrounded the Colosseum.
